How This Works
What VA back pay is
When VA grants or increases a disability rating, the decision usually carries an effective date earlier than the day the decision was issued. Back pay, also called retroactive pay, is the lump sum covering the months in between.
It is paid at the same monthly rates as ongoing compensation. There is no separate retroactive rate: the calculation is simply the ordinary monthly rate, repeated for each month of the period.
Why multi-year periods are calculated in segments
VA applies its cost-of-living adjustment on December 1 each year, so each rate table starts one month before the calendar year it is named after. December 2025 is already paid at 2026 rates.
A period that crosses one or more December 1 boundaries is therefore not one monthly rate multiplied by a number of months. It is one rate per segment, added together. The breakdown above shows each segment separately so the arithmetic can be checked line by line against VA's published tables.
How dependents change the amount
Dependent amounts begin at a combined rating of 30%. Below that, the monthly rate is the same whether or not there are dependents.
At 30% and above, VA's basic table has a column for each combination of a spouse, one child under 18, and zero, one, or two dependent parents. Everything beyond that combination is an added amount: each additional child under 18, each child aged 18 to 23 in a qualifying school program, and Aid and Attendance for a spouse. Children in a school program are always an added amount and never occupy the one-child column.
Where this estimate can differ from what VA pays
This tool assumes one rating and one dependent status for the entire period. A rating that changed mid-period, a dependent added or removed partway through, Special Monthly Compensation, and offsets for concurrent benefits are not modelled here.
VA also applies its own processing rules to the final month of a retroactive period. Treat the result as an estimate to compare against an award letter, not as a payment figure.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does VA calculate back pay?
VA pays a monthly amount for each month between the effective date of an award and the month the award is processed. The monthly amount depends on the combined disability rating and on dependents. Because VA adjusts its rates every December 1, a period that spans a rate change is calculated one rate year at a time, and those segments are added together.
What is the 2026 COLA?
The 2026 cost-of-living adjustment is 2.8%, and it took effect on December 1, 2025. VA applies the same percentage across the rate tables, so the increase appears in the basic monthly rates and in the added amounts for dependents alike. The 10% rate, for example, went from $175.51 to $180.42 per month.
How does dependent status affect back pay?
Dependent amounts apply only at a combined rating of 30% or higher; below 30% the monthly rate is the same regardless of dependents. At 30% and above, VA's basic table covers a spouse, one child under 18, and up to two dependent parents. Each additional child under 18, each child aged 18 to 23 in a qualifying school program, and Aid and Attendance for a spouse are separate amounts added on top.
Why does my back pay span multiple rate years?
VA changes its rates on December 1, not January 1. A period running from March 2024 through December 2025 therefore crosses two rate changes: part is paid at 2024 rates, part at 2025 rates, and December 2025 is already paid at 2026 rates. This calculator splits the period at each December 1 boundary and shows the monthly rate used for every segment.
Why doesn't back pay include the month of my effective date?
Under 38 U.S.C. § 5111, payment may not be made for any period before the first day of the calendar month following the month in which the award became effective. The effective month itself is therefore not paid, and counting begins with the month after it. Estimates that include the effective month come out roughly one month too high.
Is this calculator official?
No. This site is privately operated and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or any government agency. It applies the rate tables that VA publishes, and the Methodology page links to the source page for every rate year used here. The amount actually paid is determined solely by VA.
Why don't you collect my email?
There is nothing here to collect it for. The whole calculation runs inside your browser, so the dates, rating, and dependent details you enter never leave your device and are never transmitted to a server. No account and no contact details are needed to use any part of this site.
